On our blog, we share practical tips, inspiration, and insights from the world of WordPress, web design, development, and digital marketing. Whether you are a business owner, developer, or curious individual – you will find valuable content to help you improve your online presence and grow your brand

This June we attended an inspiring (and at times surprising) week at WordCamp Europe 2025 in Basel, and we’re back with a head full of insights, new connections, and more business cards than we care to count.

Here’s a look at our full experience — from Contributor Day to community dinners, great talks, and a few candid reflections on this year’s event.

Kicking Things Off in Basel

We arrived in Basel a day early and immediately got into WordCamp mode with a pre-conference meetup. What started as a casual picnic turned into some truly valuable conversations — and we even found practical solutions to a few of our current challenges before the conference officially began.

Contributor Day: Our First Time at the Table

This year marked our first-ever Contributor Day, and I had the pleasure of joining the Marketing team. Our mission was to brainstorm ways to attract more visitors to future WordCamps — and we’re proud to say we came up with some genuinely exciting ideas.

Special thanks to everyone at the marketing table — I learned a lot and appreciated the collaborative energy.

Evening Events & Meaningful Connections

The networking didn’t stop after sunset. We made our way through several side events:

    • The GoDaddy party, where we got a sneak peek at their upcoming agency plan — it looks quite promising.
    • The Kinsta® party, where we enjoyed great food and even better conversations. Shout-out to Matthew Sammut, Mike Miler, and others — Mike’s work in visual regression testing is definitely worth watching.

Later in the week, Omnisend hosted us for a cozy agency dinner. Their hospitality was top-notch, and their email/SMS marketing tool continues to impress.

WordCamp Officially Begins

Once the conference kicked off, we dove into the talks, visited the stands, and had some productive conversations — including a few very promising business discussions.

Some standout talks included:

    • “Bridging Design and Development: Figma Design Systems for WordPress Success”
    • “How to Make Your Website More Sustainable”
    • “How to Keep Your Head While Going Headless with WordPress”

We also spent time gathering swag for the team and attending workshops on the final day — a nice way to round off the experience.

Honest Reflections on WCEU 2025

While the event offered tremendous value, it also had its downsides — and we think it’s important to acknowledge both.

On the positive side:

    • The talks were more in-depth and technically focused than those I attended in Athens (2023) and Torino (2024).
    • Basel’s public transport system deserves a round of applause — clean, fast, punctual, and super easy to navigate.
    • We met lots of new faces, especially from German-speaking countries, which brought fresh energy into the WordPress community.

On the less impressive side:

    • We missed seeing familiar faces from Automattic and notable exhibitors like ManageWP, GoDaddy, and SiteGround — many big players were absent.
    • Side events and the afterparty lacked the energy and polish we saw in previous years. The high cost of everything in Basel likely played a role — from food and drinks to venue quality, everything felt scaled down.
    • A general observation: Swiss service culture is… rigid. People follow rules to the letter, which sometimes came off as a bit cold — especially in hotels and bars.

That said, these are minor setbacks in what was otherwise a week of strong ideas, great people, and exciting potential.

What’s Next?

After we got back, we reviewed everything we learned, followed up on leads, prepped a full team presentation, and planned what great ideas we will be integrating into our next projects. And of course, connecting with all the amazing people we met — both online and offline.

Huge thanks to the WCEU team for another unforgettable experience.
See you at WordCamp Europe 2026 — Krakow!

And before that — we’re not done with WordCamps for this year just yet. In August, we’ll be heading across the Atlantic to attend WordCamp US 2025. It’s another great opportunity to connect with the wider WordPress community, share ideas, and keep the momentum going.

If you’ll be there too — let us know! We’d love to meet, exchange experiences, and continue the conversations we started in Basel.
